Plein Air Painters of Hawaii
Our mission is to foster and promote the advancement of plein
air painting in Hawaii.
My intention in founding Plein Air Painters of Hawaii is to
create a statewide organization to hold paint-outs, exhibits,
to provide opportunities to share locations and paint together
on the different islands. We hope to attract collectors through
publicity and promotion of this most honest approach to painting.
When I registered the name, “Plein Air Painters of Hawaii”,
three years ago I knew exactly how I wanted to form this organization.
Of course that original idea has changed dozens of times since.
From suggestions by countless artists and conversations with
magazine editors, to experiences such as going to a Plein Air
Painters of America event in Lake Tahoe, to attending art shows
and workshops, along with a few years of research, this evolving
idea continues to take shape. It’s been very much like
the painting process itself that changes with every brushstroke.
We are attempting to model PAPOH after other successful plein
air organizations across the country. Talking with them about
their successes and failures has been a great resource.
Instead of handpicking friends and well known artists of Hawaii,
I wanted to find the best plein air painters I could to become
the signature members in the most fair and unbiased way possible.
I chose not to have a Hawaii juror because I didn’t want
to put anyone in the position of having to choose amongst his
or her peers in this tight-knit art community of ours. John
Cosby is a mainland artist I respect. He has juried many shows
and understands the process of putting together a plein air
organization. He helped form Laguna Plein Air Painters Association
years ago. LPAPA has been wildly successful in achieving its
goals. Having John jury the signature member competition will
remove any Hawaii juror from the selection process and thereby
remove any bias we might have if we were to try and do it.
Thanks to everyone for your time, input, and collective creative
spirit.
