 Julie Houck
Julie Houck is a painter of the effects of light and atmosphere in the landscape. "I am primarily interested in the transmission of light in my paintings." Julie's most recent series focus on plein air portraits of people. Never derived from photographs, these slice of life images capture moments in time en plein air.
Following a successful 16-year career as a professional photographer, where her specialty was photographing people on location, Julie decided to pursue a career as an artist. Classically trained, Julie's art education was based on the direct observation of color, light and form relationships in nature. She

"A Cafe At Night," Oil on Linen, 12x16 | studied at the Atelier of Classical Realism in San Francisco with David Hardy, the Academy of Fine Art in Seattle with Anthony Ryder and most recently, in France, at the L'Ecole Albert Defois with Ted Seth Jacobs.
Julie's paintings are exhibited extensively in Hawaii. Her work is part of the permanent collections of the Hawaii State Foundation on Culture and the Arts and the Hawaii State Art Museum. She was one of the featured artists at the commemorative "Artists of Hawaii" exhibit at the Honolulu Academy of Art in 2000 and her work has been repeatedly accepted into Art Maui.
Julie has been the recipient of numerous awards and grants including the David Warren Memorial Scholarship , a Hawaii State Foundation on Culture and the Arts Acquisition Award as well as exhibition prizes for painting. A well-respected and popular teacher, Julie also teaches plein air painting on Maui and in France.
