Jan Bushart, "Kauai Lumahai," 8x10 |
| The
words, ”plein air”, are defined in Webster’s
dictionary as “of or being a style of painting produced
out of doors in natural light.” With the advent of portable
premixed paint in tubes during the 19th century, painters of France
and elsewhere escaped their studios and roamed the countryside
in search of natural light. The French impressionists preferred
to work “en plein air,” the French term for out of
doors. Many of these outdoor paintings are the only historical
records we have of places forever changed over the course of time.
